Team Daniels Wins Gold at U18!!

Delta Thistle Curling Club is extremely proud of our Juvenile Girls, Team BC who captured the Gold medal at the Optimist U18 International Curling Championships held in Langley & Cloverdale from March 27-31. After finishing the round robin 3-2 and 2nd in their pool, Team BC beat the previously undefeated Saskatchewan rink in the Semi Finals 5-2.

Team BC

(l-r) Heather Sinclair - Lead, Megan Bourassa - Second, Megan Daniels - Third, Sarah Daniels - Skip, Ernie Daniels - Coach

The final vs Team Alberta was a very tight defensive game that was tied 2-2 going into the extra end with BC having the hammer. With 2 stones biting the button, Sarah decides to throw her last yellow stone to the boards and take it to the measure as the team was 99% sure that they were shot. Also factoring into the decision, there was a mass of guards to navigate with lots of opportunity for things to go wrong.....You be the judge:

Team BC Measurement

In the end Team BC (Yellow Stones) won the measurement by about 1/2". With the win BC retains their #1 world seeding in U18 women curling for a 2nd straight year as the Kamloops rink skipped by Corryn Brown won the event in Toronto last year.

Visit the U18 website for more information on the event.

Congratulations Girls and good eyes!!!

After spotting Team Klitch a 5-1 lead after 3 ends, Mark Hirotsu and teammates Greg Turner, Brian Read & Dean Namamura chipped away with a deuce in 4 and stealing the rest of the way enroute to a 7-5 win. Congratulations to Team Hirotsu for a great finish to the season. Frycz wins Region 11 Tour Championship!

 Region_11.JPG

A huge congratulations to our President, Don Frycz and his team: Kevin Burden, Shawn Leach, Jerry Sulina and Justin Connie for winning the Region 11 Tour Championship hosted at the Delta Thistle this past weekend.

Never forced to play more than seven ends, the Frycz team made use of home ice advantage to win the fifth annual Region 11 Men’s Bonspiel Tour Championship last Sunday. They beat the Paul Lyttle rink 7-3 in the championship final.

In the championship match Frycz scored two in the first end and led 3-1 after four ends. In the fifth end Frycz crashed on a guard on his final rock, leaving Lyttle a draw for two to tie the game 3-3. Frycz was looking at four Lyttle rocks in the rings when he went to throw his last rock, but he executed a tap back on one rock to score a single point.

In the seventh end, the Lyttle squad got into trouble and their skip faced one buried Frycz rock by the button and two more on the back 12-foot when he went to throw his final stone. Lyttle tried to make a difficult draw around guards to get by the button, but sailed through to the back of the rings and gave up a steal of three to end the game.

Way to go guys!

Team Daniels collects Bronze at Mixed Doubles Provincials

Team Daniels

At the inaugural Mixed Doubles Provincials held this past weekend at the North Shore Winter Club - The Father/Daughter team consisting of Ernie and Sarah Daniels from the Delta Thistle Curling Club brought home a bronze medal. After sweeping the round robin 3-0, Team Daniels took out one of the pre-tournament favourites, Team Dezura in the quarter finals, which included former World Champion Diane Dezura (Nelson) and husband Grant Dezura. Their semi-final loss was in a dramatic extra end to the eventual provincial winners Team Hawes/Tardi who now move on to represent BC on the national stage in Leduc, Alberta. Of note.. In round robin play, Team Daniels also pulled off a rare 6-ender (the equivelent to an 8 ender in regular game play).

Also representing the Delta Thistle at Mixed Doubles was Megan Daniels and her teammate Max Langlais from the host club. Max and Megan we're strong out of the gate in the seeding aggregate draw. Megan and Max's combined draw to the button was an amazing 19cm! The next closest team aggregate was over 100cm...Needless to say they were seeded 1st place. After a heartbreaking loss to sister, Sarah and Dad, Ernie in the first game, they fell to team Freemen from Mission in a close 2nd game. They bounced back and won their third game finishing 1-2 in the round robin just out of the playoffs.

To help subsidize their 2 trips to provincials, the team will be doing some fundraising over the next few weeks including selling 50/50's on league curling nights.
